Assembly, Decimals, Movie Reviews, Estuary Animals

Hi Families,

Assembly: Today we had our 10th year anniversary assembly of Forest Ridge being a school. We celebrated our ten years and what we've accomplished. Also during the assembly, the RAH minutes totals for each class were posted in a graph made by Mr. E. C6 read almost twice the amount of minutes of any other class in the school with almost 30,000 minutes. Way to go with RAH C6, keep it up.

Decimals: In math we are learning about how to order and add decimals. You can develop your student's awareness of decimals by pointing decimal numbers you see in daily life. Examples could be: money, sports statistics in the newspaper, weather reports on rainfall, etc.

Movie Review: Students have picked a partner and are writing a movie review of one of their favorite movies. The reviews must include main characters and the plot as well as their personal opinion of the movie. Look for publications on the blog next week. We may even submit our reviews to an online Web 2.0 site.

Estuary Animals: In science we are studying the northwest estuaries. Each student has been paired up to study a specific estuary animal and report on its habitat, appearance, and food sources. They will prepare a Prezi (like the one I did for parent night) to showcase their research.

We still need materials for our rocket launcher. So far we have one 2 liter bottle. Thanks Ayden:)

Rocket Launcher Supplies, Writing, Science

In order to do our science lesson we need some supplies to build our ROCKET LAUNCHER. Please see the list to the left for materials needed. Please email me if you can bring in supplies or have questions.

Writing. We have been working on summarizing. Today we looked at movie reviews as one authentic use of summarizing. The kids have been assigned to write their own personal review of their favorite movie. They are working in groups of 2 or 3 to write their review. The goal is to publish these reviews on the blog. I'd like the students to research their movies for characters and events that they can add into their review. THANKS.

Science (2): For our regular science curriculum, we are beginning to learn about Estuaries. We're using estuaries to learn about how animals and their environment interact (a 5th grade standard). Each student will choose one estuary creature to research and report on in class.

Rockets, Clay Pots, Multiplication, Writing

Hello again,

This week has started off with some exciting projects. The class has earned enough points for behavior to earn an extra art and science lesson.

For art, the students created pinch pots out of clay.

For an extra science lesson. We plan to invent ways to improve paper rockets. To do this, I can try to borrow a rocket launcher from my summer class or we could build one as a class. I'd like to build one for our class. See the list to the left for materials we need to build our own rocket launcher.

The class just took an assessment on multiplication, one of the major 4th grade standards we are reviewing. The test focused on their ability to use strategies to solve multiplication problems. We are shifting this week to learn about working with decimals. So far we have covered: area and perimeter, multiplication strategies, and now decimals. After decimals we start with 5th grade curriculum.

In writing we have been working on creating descriptive accounts of our experiences. We have also tried to focus on using a variety of sentence lengths to make the reading of our writing easier.
