New Idea on Homework Grades

I talked with a parent today who had a wonderful idea on the homework grades. We looked at the chart and thought we could take the student names off of the spreadsheet and just have the number to the left of the students displayed with no name. This would mean the student and the parent would have to know what their number is (1-28). For now I'll post a document that has just the name and the number separately so that it is a little less obvious whose grades belong to whom. This way we have accountability and a little more anonymity. As always I am open and eager to hear your suggestions on how I can improve my communication to you.

Estuary Wall

To the left you we see we are well into making an estuary mural on our wall. Each of the estuary creatures the kids have been studying will be displayed on the wall.

Homework

I just remembered that I didn't get a chance to explain the homework that was sent home today. ]

The math is something that they haven't seen yet: Order of Operations
Here's how it works
7 x 2 - (3 + 8) =
First you need to do what is in the parenthesis (3+8) = 11
7 x 2 - 11
Then you have to do the multiplication or division 7 x 2 = 14
14 - 11
Then solve the addition or subtraction 14 - 11 = 3

Therefore:   7 x 2 - (3 + 8) = 3

Note: Always do it in this order
Parenthesis
multiplication and division from left to right
addition and subtraction from left to right.

16 / (16 - 4 x 2) solve for 4 x 2
16 / (16 - 8) solve for (16 - 8)
16 / 8 solve the division
16 / 8 = 2

If you or your child has any other questions, please feel free to email me tonight or tomorrow and I can help...or bring in your questions on Monday.

Happy Harvest, Party, Conferences, Field Trip

Happy Halloween,

We are having a wonderful celebration today to celebrate the harvest as well as Kylee and Kaylee, and Mr. J's October birthdays. A few parents have planned some wonderful activities, games and treats and everyone's characters look awesome!

Conferences: To the left you will see the conference schedule already forming. Forms were sent home last week. Students with a * by their name may have to change times based on when their siblings conferences are scheduled with the other teachers. Thanks to those who already have their slips in. I'll update the schedule as more slips come in.

Field trip forms should be turned in by Wednesday so that I can give a lunch count to Food Services.

Have a Happy and Safe Halloween tonight!
